Community Services is an outward-facing ministry of Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church dedicated to meeting practical needs, strengthening families, and building meaningful relationships throughout our community.
Our model is Dorcas—Tabitha, the disciple described in Acts 9 as being “full of good works and acts of charity.” When she died, the widows she had served brought out the clothing she had made for them. Her impact was not simply remembered in words; her community could point to the things she had done.
Don't just tell people that you care. Show them.
Berea seeks to carry that same spirit into Nyack, Rockland County, and the surrounding communities: not simply talking about compassion, but putting compassion into action.
Why Community Services Matters
Food insecurity is a real issue in the communities surrounding Berea.
- Rockland County: Feeding America data for 2023 estimated that 40,630 Rockland County residents—12.0% of the population—were food insecure.
- Rockland children: In 2023, approximately 16.3% of Rockland County residents under age 18 experienced food insecurity, according to the county's community health assessment.
- New York State: USDA data for 2022–2024 indicate that approximately 14% of New York households experienced food insecurity, or about 1 in 7 households.
- The New York State Council on Hunger and Food Policy estimates approximately 1.1 million food-insecure households in the state during that period.
These numbers represent more than statistics. They represent children, seniors, working families, individuals, and neighbors who may have to make difficult choices about putting food on the table.
The Dorcas Model
Dorcas teaches us three important things about Christian service:
1. See the need.
Dorcas recognized the people around her who needed practical support.
2. Use what you have.
Her ministry included something as tangible as making clothing for widows.
3. Let service open the door to faith.
After Dorcas was restored to life, the story says that the news spread throughout Joppa and many believed in the Lord.
Our Vision
To be a church that sees the needs of its community and responds with compassion, dignity, practical service, and the love of Christ.
